In the future, in a town similar and recognizable as a possible Sacramento, I host shows called Work Mob. I book them and introduce each player and after each set, I am expected to answer questions about the act. My accountability to the audience is a given, this is how things go now.
After selling merch, I pay the band in two pairs of shoes. During the Q+A, I realize that I am with an indescribable fear - pure terror inside me. I can answer these questions NO LONGER, and I will escape through the sewers, through a National Park, to my friend’s house. I stayed there last weekend when I went through a similar ordeal (Work Mob show, questions, fear, escape) and she may perhaps be able to shelter me from this feeling that grips me. As I run through subterranean tubes, I hear the questions echoing - the crowd follows, needing their answers.
After all, SOMEONE has to explain. Am I a know-it-all? I hope not, and indeed, in this moment as I run, I know only fear. I reach the safe asylum of E.L.'s house and her roommate lets me in. I met him last weekend and he has the normal holes in his face, but also an additional hole- just an empty darkness, quarter sized, on the side of his cheek. He grins as he recognizes me. "Hey Bill," I say, "I met you last week, right?" His expression is jovial, insinuating an affirmative response. As I walk past him into the house, he asks "How was Work Mob? Was it rare?"
