about

If you stand out by the Cliff House on one of those perfectly partly-cloudy days; when the fog helps to put things in perspective, rather than blotting out your view. Over there, near the Camera Obscura & Holograph Gallery, you’ll get gusts of wind and ocean spray from the waves below. Plastic Candles’ “Dust” is like those waves crashing on the cliff-face: dreamy outsider pop with continuous layers of tape hiss, buried thumps of a drum machine, muttered vocals, and drony lead guitar lines

Plastic Candles is the home-recording project by San Francisco-based David Diaz. When David isn’t recording with friends, he’s playing guitar in April Magazine, surfing at Ocean Beach, skating through the streets of SF, or hanging out at a Hit Gallery show.

David says “Plastic Candles ‘Dust’ was inspired from the writings of J.D. Salinger and Leonard Cohen. They were the two authors I was reading at the time I wrote all the songs. It’s a combination of four-track recordings and voice memos bounced to a Tascam. It was all recorded and mixed by me. Matt Ferrara mastered it. There’s drum machine for mostly all tracks except for one that my friend Anthony Matarazzo played drums on. The cover image was taken by me and designed by Kevin Linn and the back artwork was drawn by my friend Rebecca Diaz.”
