FLOWERTOWN’s sweet lo-fi melodies evoke a landscape of beautifully distant sadness. Karina Gill and Mike Ramos front their own projects (Cindy and Tony Jay, respectively), but have joined together on this 6-track EP to raise funds for Peter Hurley’s Hit Gallery. Peter says “Hit Gallery/Hit Factory Pop City serves as a melting pot where art exhibitions, performances, music, poetry readings, film screenings, guest lectures, found objects and noodle parties have space to interact and connect directly with our San Francisco and Bay Area communities.” Admittance is always NOTAFLOF, the space is communal, (sometimes) bands perform inches away from the audience, and gallery exhibitions show perspectives of life across the Bay.

Tracks on this release, like “Natural Light”, recall pop melodies but under the haze of a hissing and clicking cassette tape. “The Rope” and “Pieta” give us these voices of subjects trying to cope. They’re not idealists, not romantics; they just want it all to have happened differently. The songs find the perfect blend between the not-so-distant observer of Karina’s lyrics and the removed cynic in Mike’s songwriting.

Limited edition of 16 tapes, duplicated on my tape deck, J-cards printed by FedEx/Kinkos, all funds from both digital and physical releases will be donated to Hit Gallery.
