Emerging from the crunchy lo-fi hiss of a Tascam 4-track are some of the catchiest, hook-filled, indie-rock bangers I’ve heard in a while. (And when I write ‘bangers’ I mean that feeling Robert Pollard gets when he executes a successful high-kick or what yelling “QUINCY” felt like by Dez Cadena in the ‘TV Party’ music video.)
Portabella are Jason and Will, two half-brothers from Spartanburg, South Carolina. They’ve been making music in some form for the last 20 years with a rotating cast of friends popping in.
Ethereal guitar lines, bass leading melodies, live drums / machine drums, and choruses that just stick right to the roof of your mouth. These songs are just plain well-constructed: an atonal solo may catch your attention, but then there’s the hook to keep you going.
There are a number of influences channelled here: the first couple of tracks I heard immediately reminded me of that early GBV sound, but when I dug deeper I found Chrome/Helios Creed, Kamera-era The Fall, SST-era Dinosaur Jr., and the twisted sound of Eric Gaffney’s Sebadoh.
All tracks recorded straight to tape on a Tascam Portastudio,
