Sunday Music For An Overpass

David Miller Very close to my fave album for 2021. Pipped by American Culture by my reckoning, but a wonderful journey to experience. Raw lo-fi tones to lose yourself in. Soft Purple Sky and Tiffany's Days Go By - so sad when they end. You want to live in these worlds forever. And really who needs sex when you can listen to Blue? Has brought much comfort to a bleak year. Favorite track: Blue.

Bill's Rockpile Saw band for first time opening for Rays/Love-Birds/Honey Radar at Hemlock Tavern. Transfixed. Only lament is "Always" not on this release.

Fran Carlyon Like falling into a beautiful dream. One of the finest things I’ve heard this year. An album to lose yourself in, perfect for hazy afternoons in the sun, or late at night with your headphones in. Favorite track: Sugar Daddy.

about

There’s something beautifully haphazard to the April Magazine experience: sometimes ramshackle pop workers, sometimes tight ethereal jammers, & sometimes dreamy soundscape makers. When played live they’ll take you someplace far away; when recorded you’ll get a real taste of low fidelity dream pop for a seemingly never-ending afternoon.

The band is usually composed of Peter Hurley, Kati Mashikian, David Diaz, & Mike Ramos; but from my understanding, an April Magazine recording may include all four members, just Peter & Kati, only Peter, or a slew of other friends filling in. Mike’s minimal drumming & David’s spaced-out guitar playing create the perfect backdrop to Kati’s driving bass & Peter’s lead guitar; while the latter two trade off vocals.

Catch the band at venues around San Francisco, at Hit Gallery, or playing under a freeway overpass at dusk.
