about

Field recordings, eerie/distraught vocal melodies, and percussive flutters make up this short experimental album.

Max Nordile’s “Vying For The Dime” is a brief but comprehensive showcase of his sound: from distant outsider music “Glove Biz”, deranged clutter “Tree (cell tower)”, ambient musique concrete “101”, and free-jazz-freak-folk “Dusted Angel”. Each track feels like it’s recorded in a different space, different rooms, outside in a garden, at a restaurant, near a construction site, etc.; it seems to move you around town.

The album is filled with Harry Partch-like clutter & dings, but like Nordile’s most recent album “Building A Better Void” (Gilgongo Records), there’s something else going on here. In the past his work has been labeled as “junkyard” music, but here he sheds any Beefheart/mid-career Tom Waits comparisons and presents a life that’s very much amongst others. Like the muffled sounds of an upstairs neighbor or those brief moments when you walk into an open, but empty, store. It’s familiar, domestic, and eerily comforting.

The majority of the releases on Nordile’s Hair Clinic / Music For People Bandcamp have been my background music for the last many lockdown-filled months. The crunchy squashed field recordings, the non-music pitter-patter, and jolting improvisational instrumentals are these amazing documents of life.
