about

Like a crisp winter night in the suburbs: moon shines through frosted branches; sidewalk lit by a lone streetlamp; each new step crunches snow underfoot. Madison, Wisconsin’s Red Pants takes droning layered guitars, raw drumming, and murmured vocal melodies and makes beautiful noise pop on “When We Were Dancing”.

Red Pants is the solo project of Jason Lambeth: curator and owner behind Painted Blonde Tapes, avid 4-track cassette user, father (the subjects in most of his music videos are his two daughters), and all-around supporter of independent & DIY music-makers. Jason is joined by longtime collaborator Elsa Nekola on drums and vocals to complete their most spacious sounding album yet.

One of the promo photos Red Pants sent over was Jason and Elsa standing outside a large red barn in the cold. A fitting photo for the snow-crunching distortion on tracks like “Lost Momentum” and “Never Enough”; two nearly-shoegaze rockers. But there has always been a kind of domesticity to Jason’s work: inside the warmth of the barn, we have tracks like “In The Passing Time” or “Humming”. His love of lo-fi cassette recordings and 90s indie rock seem to flow together to form a work that’s both intimate and intense.
