Trickles of icy synths, psychedelic bridges, acoustic pieces, and the familiar fist-pounding / guitar-wrecking numbers that keep you wanting more. The experimental rock & lo-fi psychedelia of Portabella’s “Return To The Fountain Of Olives” somehow manages to fully explore the Dinosaur Jr / Sebadoh universe (Mascis/Barlow/Gaffney) but covers it with Butthole Surfers-meets-Alice Donut intense weirdness.

Spartanburg, SC’s Jason & Will “return” on this follow-up to their 2020 self-titled album. Portabella takes on a more cohesive sound: songs have more defined parts, we get glimpses of soft acoustics “Dancing Moon Eggs”, slow spacers “Valley Of Imploding Cups”, GBV-anthems “The Wrong Way”, & guitar freakouts “New Born Swine”. Everything Portabella really just feels like a lost Amphetamine Reptile release: weird & heavy when it can / rocking-out when it needs to be.
